Boo! Happy Halloween!

Halloween is the one of the few times a year where we get to dress up and not be ourselves for a day. We can be Superwoman, Batman, a sexy black cat, a doctor, etc. But who are we when it’s not Halloween? We often give ourselves labels and titles and attach ourselves to certain characteristics or beliefs that can hold us back.

In our social media driven society, it can be challenging to not let our ego get in the way. The Sanskrit word, Vritti, describes the whirling thoughts that distort and filter our perception. Its definition serves as the perfect metaphor for the alternate reality our society has created. We allow hashtags, filters, metadata, emoticons, photos, and short descriptions to define our personal brand and how we view others. We curate the version of ourselves that we want people to see; everything is thought out, pre-planned, edited, and photoshopped. We no longer can just enjoy a sunset, a good meal, or a great experience.  We first must take a photo of it, add a filter, create a witty caption, and hope that people will like our experience too. And if we don’t get enough likes and followers from what we’ve shared, we suddenly wonder if our experience was good enough.

If we give in to our insecurities and allow our ego to take over, we limit ourselves from being our true authentic selves and reaching our fullest potential. We also constrain our ability to enjoy life and all of the little moments in between.

We are not just the hashtags that we give ourselves. We are so much more.
